According to the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, a total of 163 Nigerian students gained admission into Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programmes this year, with 89 receiving fully funded scholarships. This achievement places Nigeria among the top five countries globally for admissions into the programme, alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and the United States.

The announcement was made during the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Pre-Departure Orientation held in Abuja for successful scholarship recipients preparing to begin their postgraduate studies at leading universities across Europe.

The 2026 scholarship awards represent an increase from 81 Nigerian beneficiaries in 2025, reflecting the country’s growing success in one of the world’s most competitive postgraduate scholarship schemes. Since Nigeria joined the programme in 2014, the number of Nigerian beneficiaries has continued to rise, with the initiative approaching the milestone of 1,000 scholarship recipients.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme enables students to pursue interdisciplinary master’s degrees at two or more universities in participating European countries, culminating in joint, double, or multiple degrees while providing full financial support throughout the duration of the programme.

Speaking at the orientation, Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for Nigerian students through merit-based access to world-class institutions. He also highlighted ongoing collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and Nigerian universities to further improve Nigeria’s global standing within the Erasmus programme.

He encouraged the scholars to serve as ambassadors of Nigeria during their studies abroad and to return with the knowledge, skills, and international perspectives needed to contribute to national development.

Representing the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Dr. Chinelo Nwosu, Director of the Directorate of Students, commended the European Union for its continued investment in Nigeria’s human capital development. She urged the beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity by remaining focused academically and applying their acquired expertise to support Nigeria’s growth upon completion of their studies.

Similarly, the Federal Ministry of Education, represented by the Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards, Mrs. Liman K.A.A., described the orientation as a celebration of academic excellence and the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the European Union in advancing education, research, innovation, and human capital development. She encouraged the scholars to uphold the values of integrity, academic excellence, and cultural respect throughout their studies.

One of the scholarship recipients, Oluchi Yulis Myron, who will study Cultural Management, expressed enthusiasm about the programme’s international learning experience. She noted that the Erasmus Mundus model offers unique opportunities to study across multiple countries, engage with diverse cultures, and acquire global best practices that can strengthen Nigeria’s creative and cultural sectors upon her return.

As the European Union’s flagship international postgraduate scholarship initiative, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme continues to provide outstanding students with access to leading European universities while fostering international collaboration, academic excellence, and leadership development.

Nigeria’s strong performance in the 2026 admissions cycle underscores the country’s growing reputation for producing globally competitive graduates and reinforces the importance of international academic partnerships in developing future leaders and professionals.
