The Long-Term Value of an MBA Degree

MBA Programmes are important in securing leading roles in workplaces, adding financial value to a long-term business, understanding people’s perspectives and leading a team, and delivering and receiving constructive feedback effectively. All of these make up essential traits in a good leader, and all have a very sharp learning curve.

MBA offers an education in management and leadership; all through experiential learning with an inclusion of the inevitable mistakes that accompanies the development of these skills in an educational and safe space. Getting an education in leadership by failing on the job is very expensive! It makes MBA more important and helps to avoid mediocre performance ratings, like “Meets Expectations,” in your first role as a manager. Though harmless, this kind of rating sticks forever if you are working in a large company and makes it more difficult to advance to bigger roles within that company. You can lose control of the narrative and become someone who was “Great as an individual contributor, but questionable as a manager.” It is better and easier to avoid this mediocre rating from the onset and stay on the fast track than to fall off and get back on.

MBA is a powerful degree and will help you get more promotions along the way. The long-term benefits are highlighted below. It:

  • Equips you with effective methods for identifying, sourcing and recommending potential talents to clients and portfolio companies.
  • Helps you build a wide and diverse  network of professionals from various industries and firms.
  • Reduces your career risk in cases of project fail
  • Helps you find a career path easily and achieve long-term success in a chosen career
  • Creates opportunities for international experiences from a variety of industries.

An important caveat before applying is that an MBA is not a magic pill and prior experience is needed to land some roles in any workspace. The right pre-MBA background is also highly important in product management roles, private equity roles or top tech companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and others. MBA will accelerate your success story and make a career pivot in these industries.

In conclusion, it is important to consider the long-term benefits and value of an MBA. Careful consideration of job roles, career paths and long-term career goals will help you better evaluate the importance of an MBA and how it will be a necessity for your financial success and personal fulfillment.
